Holiday ActivitiesBrian O'Hara
As we move into the sultry heat of a Hoosier August, it hardly seems the time to begin a discussion of Holiday activities, but as many of you know, they will be on us quickly. So I am writing to encourage each and everyone one of you to get behind our local causes and do what you can to help those less fortunate.
This year we are attempting to assist with the US Marine Reserves, Toys for Tots program. Toys for Tots is a private, non profit, non denominational activity of the US Marine Reserves that involves collecting toys around the state for those unfortunate children who might other wise would have very little to celebrate over the Holiday Season. What follows is an excerpt from a letter one of the Toys for Tots coordinators received two Holiday Seasons ago that shows how important this work can be. We will call the mother Alice to protect her identity.
“Alice, the mother of two children, lost everything owned during a recent fire. The Holiday season was looking very bleak. They were lucky enough to find temporary housing with a relative shortly before Christmas and due to Toys for Tots were able to wake up to a morning of children with smiles on their face” .
Toys for Tots provides Hope and Happiness to the less fortunate children in our area. If any of you would like more information about the program or would like to participate, please feel free to drop me a line or check out the local Toys for Tots web site.
We are also throwing our support behind one of Indiana’s landmark causes, Bob Gregory and WTHR Channel 13 Coats for Kids program. The program will kick off sometime in October so stay tuned for more information on our website. This cause is now in its 30th year and can always use a few extra hands. If you are interested in helping out, please drop me a line or go directly to the WTHR site for more details.
That is enough for now. Please enjoy what is left of our wonderful summer, but remember, winter is just around the corner and our children can always use a helping hand.
